What Not to Flush

Only three things belong in the sewer: water, human waste and toilet paper. Everything else can clog pipes in your home and in the District’s system, causing backups and overflows that are expensive to fix.

Fats, oils and grease (FOG)
Scrape and wipe grease and oil from pans and dishes with a paper towel and throw the towel in the trash before washing. Pour cooled fats, grease and cooking oil into a container with a lid, and put it in the trash when full.

Wipes and other items
Never flush wipes, even ones labeled “flushable,” or paper towels, diapers, feminine products, cotton swabs, dental floss or cat litter. Put them in the trash.

Food scraps
Use sink strainers to catch food, then empty them into the trash.

Medications
Never pour or flush medications. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office holds a medication take-back program each year, and local pharmacies can help with safe disposal.
